Kudos for wanting to gain insight through what you read.

Just please don't take what James writes as your only indication for how all grown-ups live. The series is notorious for misrepresenting those who participate in S&M culture in a healthy way and has been claimed by many to portray domestic violence rather than "proper" S&M. Take what she writes with a grain of salt and make sure you pursue other examples of the genre as well, not just James'.

Why? It's just a book. No one is being exploited by its sale the way some people might be if she were watching internet porn. People of all ages should be informed about sex in a safe environment. Even very poorly written, very badly researched sex. I'd far rather see students reading books about sex- especially S&M- than going out and putting themselves in those same situations without any experience, with people they don't know, where they could be taken advantage of.
